Debiasn 3.0 xwindows problem

I have just installed debian 3.0. When I run "startx" to run KDE, I get error message...

(EE) Screen(s) found, but none has a usable configuration

Then it takes me back to the text console screen.

My graphics card is Chaintech G-Force MX 400/200 64meg (A-mx40)

I am relatively new to Linux (lost without the GUI)....

thanks
dd

Just log in as root and type xf86config.You should have the specs of your card and monitor at hand.Don't worry if it doesn't work the first time - just try again.THIS IS NOT THE DEBIANWAY - but it works for me.

I did get slightly further by changing my graphics card to an old Diamond Stealth3D and running xf86config. But now startx looks like it is getting hung on the mouse and then aborting with the error...

(EE) Mouse1: cannot open input device
(EE) Preinit failed for input device "Mouse1"
(II) Keyboard "Keyboard1" handled by legacy driver
(ww) no core pointer registered no core pointer
fatal server error

=========

My mainboard is an ASUS A&V333
My mouse is an old 3-button mouse plugged into the ps2 port.
When building the kernel modules, I do select the mouse module.

What do I do next?

thanks
dd

Ha! I fixed the mouse problem with info I found here!!

In xf86config I set the mouse to /dev/psaux instead of /dev/mouse !!!

KDE is great!!
