At the point where it stops, you will need to edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and fix the Monitor section and maybe adjust the Driver line and Screen section, so that the proper resolutions and frequencies are configured for your monitors capabilities. Pay particular attention to the monitor section, so the horiz and vert numbers match your monitor.
To edit the file, login as root if possible, or use SUDO and name an editor you like, and the file path/name to the above mentioned file.
You may first need to hit CTRL-ALT-F# to get another terminal to log in on.
The LiveCD may have a way of specifying these settings on boot, or of saving your configuration permanently so you dont have to do this every time you use it.
