Bringing Mandrake user accounts to Kubuntu

Is this possible and easy to do? I do have different partitions for my home, root, boot, and swap.

I haven't tried, but theoretically if you copy all the files with info about the users from one machine to another... well, try it and tell us if that worked. Don't forget to backup the files because if it doesn't work you'll need a redo.

/etc/passwd - user account information
/etc/shadow - secure user account information
/etc/group - group information
/etc/gshadow - secure group information
/home - home directories

I hope I am not forgetting any file.

Thanks a lot for the advice, xukosky.

Before I make the drastic shift from one OS to another, can someone please-please confirm this information?

The important thing is the user-ID numbers. Mandrake starts numbering users from 500. I don't know about kubuntu. You can look at the file /etc/passwd to get the user and group numbers. Then make sure when you create the users in kubuntu that they get the same numbers. That way they will automatically get the same (old) permissions to their home directories.
