Boot from external Hard disk

I have recently installed "Slax Kill Bill" on my laptop. Ive installed it on an external hard disk, as well as the MBR, this because the internal hard drive doesnt work anymore. The instalation process went without any trouble untill i tried to boot it up, and get the following error:
"Please append a correct "root="boot option"

Can any1 help please, as i suspect i need to edit the bootloader which in this case is LILO, but do not have a clue on how to go about it...

Thanks

Well if you installed it to a external drive because the internal does not work, does the mbr on the non working drive even work? Most modern computer have an option in the bootup in the bios to try other devices at boot. what I am saying is maybe you should have installed the lilo/grub to the external drive and let it boot from there. Does this laptop have a floppy drive? You could then use a bootup floppy to start the system.

The MBR was installed on the external hard disk "dev/sda", and no there isnt an internal floppy disk on my laptop. Thanks for your reply tough
