a distribution for a router / firewall?

Hi.

A simple subjective question: what distribution would you promote for a simple router / firewall machine, AMD k6-2 in this case?

A stable release. And would not want to play with continuous updates on a such machine. Should I go with the Debian?

That was my first thought but then googled various distrubitons designed for that sole purpose only; Astaro, Devil-Linux, IPCop, and so forth. I have never even lay my eye on such distributions before. Are they worth trying? Do they outpace (a bad word in this case..) the 'normal' distributions in what they do? Any experiences?

Some extramural, please.

you've not said a shred of anythign about what you want this router to do... astaro and ipcop are not router distro's, they are firewall distro's which naturally performing a good degree of router functionality... They are designed to be solely managed through a central web interface, and you would not need to know anythign about linux to use one...

Hi.

This was a duplex message (see the earlier one with the same subject), sorry about that.

The AMD would host a small home network, say, three to four machines at max. With a quick overview managed to reach the same conclusion, yet Devil-Linux seem to support some things (e.g. hardened sources) that I would be also looking for.

Debian is like a swiss army knife that can be used for almost anything. I would probably go with that.
