.xinitrc - nxclient = no go

I am running Gentoo and I wish to have a second screen with a remote nx session on it; startx for that user will take you right to the remote session. I have done this long ago but I am having some trouble this time around.

all we need to do is make the .xinitrc file say 'exec nxclient' this starts x and loads the connect dialog, but it doesn't work (hmm) I can't see any errors and I attempted to route the console messages to a file, but it came up empty.

Does the nxclient work? Yes it does, somewhat - if I 'exec xterm' for .xinitrc I get a nice xterm and if I run nxclient from there, it does work, but this is annoying because I don't want an xterm, I want my remote screen.

Anyone know any issue that may cause this? I have tailed the log file on the client and server and see nothing hinky going on.

looks like the issue is that nxclient starts nxssh once the connection is made, and since the parent exec process dies, there is no more x destop... can anyone think of a workaround to keep x open?
