Why does Plasma run like sludge on this box?

Experimenting with Plasma on a Dell Inspiron
AMD Ryzen 7 2700 Eight-core
AMD Ellesmere Radeon
16 GB DIMM DDR4

Have tried Gecko Plasma, Kubuntu, and Ubuntu Studio and all of them are too slow to use at all.

Any ideas what the issue might be?

(Ubuntu Studio runs great in xfce, but the Plasma release is like molasses. I don't like xfce and would actually rather use Windows)

I can't explain what's happening, as a search shows it in other distros. There doesn't seem to be any problem with PCLinuxOS, though — you could try that.

Wild guess: Plasma relies on hardware accelaration which isn't available because new & quirky AMD GPU/drivers.

If it was a driver problem, wouldn't it affect all distros? In addition to the distros mentioned by the OP, Arch is having problems, but I've just checked and OpenSUSE seems to work, as well as PCLinuxOS.

Obviously not because not all distros use the same driver/kernel module.

What does inxi -Ga report? Did you give Plasma enough time to complete its initial background tasks, including cataloging your personal files?

+1 & Glad you said Plasma runs like sludge. Runs like sludge here too. Lack of Ghz/ram/cores?

I thought kde2 was bloatware. It seems every program has a marathon bash script full of 'wait' statements.
