Cool What ways can one restart X without losing running programs

I know the conventional answer is "you cannot", but I'm not accepting that, having already heard there are ways to do this using xpra, running applications through a network.

so, presuming without network piping, can x be restarted and keep running programs running?

p.s. dont let those links fool you. i'm not on ubuntu, those links were just the most immediately available & helpful.

xpra is like screen or tmux, you can use it locally if you want. One thing is common, the application must be started inside it. Applications started on top of X session will still terminate when X is shut down.

Not sure how to answer exactly. Guess we'd need to know more about the programs. Some programs just use the gui to direct changes and the underlying program runs really in a command line. I'd think that modern window programs may not like having x restarted for sure. The best way to start may be to crash the system and see what happens and go from there.
