Ubuntu hardy is very slow at startup

Once I start up Ubuntu on my desktop, Gnome loads up just fine without a problem. Once I start clicking on things like amarok, any games, mplayer or even any directories, it seems to take forever to load. Amarok once took about 10 mins before it showed up on screen. The only program that does not give me any problem is VLC player. I'm not really sure what info to post so if anyone has a good place to start, let me know please.

Ubuntu never gave me any problems until about 1 week ago. About 3 weeks ago I went through this tutorial for getting ubuntu to display on my old TV, but it was running just fine 2 weeks after that. That was the last change I've made since besides regular updates. I have an old install of Debian on another partition that loads up just fine and runs quick as ever. Oh, and I switched it to a static IP address, but thats probably irrelevant.

Any typos in following the tutorial?
