If you have Adobe Reader at the current version -- 9.4.7 -- and you have CUPS at the current version -- 1.4.6 -- and you have HPLIP at the current version -- 3.12.2 -- and if you've got Firefox at the current version -- 10.0.1 -- you're about as good to go as you're going to get. One addition would be Ghostscript -- which should be at version 9.02 -- there were problems some months ago with Ghostscript.

I'm running Ubuntu Lucid (v10.04) and I have:
  • Okular -- v10.5
  • gs(Ghostscript) -- v8.71
  • gv(ghostview) -- v3.6.8
  • firefox -- v10.0.2
  • evince -- v2.30.3
  • acroread -- v9.4.7
  • cups -- v1.4.3
  • hplip -- v3.10.2
Since I'm running Lucid, my software editions seem much older than what your post indicates. That said, it does not explain why my troubles started suddenly (during the holidays) and continue. Since the rest of the net is not in flames about PDF troubles,
the "crisis" must be mine along or simply too small for most to bother.
