tinywm and wmutils (how do I move an unfocused window?)

I've made it a challenge for myself to make tinywm usable (with manual tiling or keyboard driven window manipulation) using wmutils commands. The problem though is that no windows seem to be ever focused/active thus most wmutils commands don't have any effect. What can you suggest for a workaround? Or am I missing something?

Sounds like a challenge.

tinywm:
"...created as an exercise in minimalism. It is also maybe helpful in learning some of the very basics of creating a window manager. It is only around 50 lines of C."
So I guess reading those 50 lines might help.
Also: http://incise.org/tinywm.html

wmutils: https://github.com/wmutils/core
(there's also plenty of man pages)
