Problem to start Scim

I have installed Scim and relevant packages in order to input Chinese and Japanese. But I cannot start scim by ctrl-space.
When I typed scim in a terminal window,I got an error message
(scim-panel-gtk:9108): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib

(scim-panel-gtk:9108): Gdk-WARNING **: cannot set locale modifiers

Maybe I need to change my locale? How do I change it?I am using ubuntu 6.06

Thank you
