on two desktops within two days - Session lasted 10 sec, syndeamon - no process found

On two desktops running Mint 18 "Sarah" that were running normally, and plenty of disk space, the " session lasted only 10 sec Syndeamon - no process found error appeared
cannot cannot start Xwindows. This occurred within two days of each other

Both systems run Nvidia Cuda so X sessions was disabled by the toolkit

Using ctrl-alt F1 for the root terminal I can see that the environmental variable and .profile are still intact. but I cannot permanently alter them using export. I can also see that the system files, apps, data are still present ..I cannot get a GUI running at all. Running Grub fixes did not help

I've been trying for several days now to correc this issue .

---

Did see from https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtop...6ac72&start=20 that Virtual box may be the culprit. I did update both systems. But I do not use Virtual box...

will repost after I hack at Virtual box.--->>> Using the above link to remove Virutalbox* and virtualbox-guest* did NOT solve the problem.

thanks

I'd start by looking in the logs. Mint uses SystemD, but I believe it also has rsyslog installed to render the logs in traditional format.

I'd start with /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

This link explains how to use SystemD tools to view Xorg logs directly: http://who-t.blogspot.com/2014/03/vi...ournalctl.html

If you find nothing in Xorg.0.log, look at the system log (depending on the distro, it may be called "system," "messages," "syslog," or some variant there of.
