nodm display manager - cursor is not visible

I have a machine which uses nodm display manager. x11 works but a mouse cursor is not visible. I haven't found any configuration which explicitly disables a mouse cursor. I guess that there may not be a cursor resource file. /etc/X11/Xresources/ contains only x11-common file:

Code:
! $Id$

! load color-specific resources for clients that have them
#ifdef COLOR
*customization: -color
#endif

! make Xaw (Athena widget set) clients understand the delete key
! this causes problems with some non-Xaw apps, use with care
! *Text.translations: #override ~Shift ~Meta <Key>Delete: delete-next-character()
Where xserver looking for resources ?

why do you need nodm?
can't you just startx without any dm?
can you get a mouse cursor if you login in some other way?
which distro?

You might first verify the hardware can be seen by the software.
Code:
$ dmesg | grep -i mouse
$ lsusb | grep -i mouse
If either command returns blank, you'll know you have a hardware problem (though the second may be blank if you have a non-USB mouse).

I've never seen a case where X didn't automatically see the mouse, so I'm not sure how to diagnose further.

----- Edit
You should also be able to see a mouse device.
Code:
$ ls /dev/input/mou*
