Mepis 7 on old sony laptop: can't install local printer; easy in Mepis 3.2
I have a Sony vaio pcg-nvr23. WinXP gave me the BSOD when i tried to install a cardbus NIC so I tried an old Mepis live CD distro that worked perfectly and recognized all H/W including the NIC that ate Windows and my HP 1320 Laserjet printer on the pll port. It Just Worked.
Want to install new Mepis so this box is a little Linux dktp. But Mepis 7 Live CD gives all manner of errors when I try to set up the printer on the parallel port. (Haven't tried USB as all slots are full).
Printer is listed but rejects jobs. When I attempt to pretest at the appointed place in install, I get msg "unable to create temporary printer." I get a variety of server (presumably CUPS) errors that I never saw in the older version (sorry no record of these). I followed a procedure for starting the server from the command line but it didn't seem to make any difference in the end.
Does anyone know the the right way to set up this printer on this box as local printer w. this OS? Have checked KDE printer support docs. but not found anything helpful yet. Has anyone else had this prob? Has MEPIS dropped support for this laptop?
Thanks
