Machine powers down on session logout

Hello,
I have been experiencing something strange on multiple user accounts :

on session logout, the machine seem to power itself down.
it does so either if i use the various logging out options from the menu, but also by directly typing "xfce4-session-logout" or "xfce4-session-logout --logout"

the /var/log/messages content did not really yield anything of interest, except that it seems the computer shuts down during the process of stopping services, without warning.

note that sometime, it manages to reach the user login screen, and then proceed to power off.

this does not occurs every time.

Which OS/release?
Did someone played a mischief and linked logout with shutdown?
