Looking for Xorg version info and history

I'm trying to understand the strange version numbers for Xorg. Looking on the home page, there, as well as the Wikipedia page, I find a few references to some version numbers, but nowhere near enough to get a clear big picture of what is going on. Does anyone know where to find that?

There are version numbers in the 1.8 and similar range. Those aren't listed, so "understand it all" isn't working, here, yet.
