Linux Mint does not start up, corrupted root.

I am running Mint MATE on a desktop Lenovo. I have used it for weeks. It has apparmor. I have used it for studies, videos, email and youtube...

It started playing up days ago. It would not restart and I had to manually apply the start button.

Now when I do this there is not boot up. Nor in recovery mode.

It reads like this:

root file system
fsck from util-linux 2.27.1
file system with errors
inodes that were part of a corrupted orphan linked list found
RUN fsck manually (ie) without -a or -p options)
fsck exited with status code 4

Can this be fixed?

Sounds like you have shut down incorrectly or have a hard drive that is going bad, or has went bad.

You can boot into a rescue environment on a USB/CD and run 'fsck' on your disk, as suggested, to see if it can be saved. Hopefully it was just powered off incorrectly and can be salvaged. Worst case - your HDD is done.

Boot with a LM bootable media such as the one used to install LM...(not mandatory)
"Try" option for most LiveCDs these days...
Run gParted from that environment.
Select correct drive/partition of the troubled installation and right click "Check" I believe is the label, and then the Apply Button.
Exit gParted when Check is finished.
Remove LiveCD media and reboot.
You may still have issues with disk space, but baby-steps...

Good Luck.

So, Recovery Mode > 'root shell prompt' asks for root password?

root shell prompt should not, I think.

I'm stuck.

How can I get the control D to work?

to avoid the times one forgets to remember their passwords, stop making them so ridiculousness one cannot remember it.

he is right you know, @Habitual a split system is a better way to go, unless all you have to work with is about x = <= ~30GB.
