kde 4.4.5 spacers aren't behaving, grr

Hello, i'm using Debian stable, so that's why the older version of kde. I have several icons in my panel with a spacer in between each, all evenly parted. I have shrunk each spacer to my a size i wanted. When i restart my computer, the spacers have spread them selves out like the 'set flexible size' option has been ticked. Any way to keep my spacers the way i set them. I haven't had this issue with any other distro.
