What kind of hardware do you have exactly? Which debian was installed (32 or 64 bit?).

This is a 32 bit PC, an intel server motherboard s875wp1-e with 3.2ghz prescott pentium 4 CPU 800 mhz bus, 3gb ddr. It has a MSI geforce 6200 with 128mb of memory.
It works ok in windows 7 even on netflix HD and youtube (at 480p)

here is a video of it playing netflix in win7 sp1 32 bit, it looks very smooth. (herringbone stuff is just the LCD TV reacting with the phone camera)

yes, probably better to choose another os, which supports this old hardware.

That is why I tried Debian 32 bit, as it was on web lists saying it supports old hardware, but not really very well it seems...

I think I saw ubuntu Mate supports 32 bit. I am going to remember not to try debian again, I also did not like the desktop menus, what I could see of them. I have like linux mint cinnamon and ubuntu gnome

As someone already stated, it appears OP is 'going too fast,' and perhaps not understanding his own hardware. I'll surmise that, since the graphics card is an old 600 Series nVidia GeForce, that the machine (desktop or laptop?) is older, and

1)requires the 'nomodeset' boot parameter be inserted in GRUB at the end of the line that begins with "linux" (the kernel line) prior to installing the nVidia Linux driver.

Since OP will have to become root in order to install the driver from a noX environment, why not tell him how to become root instead fo this sudo and su beat-around-the-bush BS?

2)Hit
Code:
Ctrl-Alt-F2
and at the prompt enter
Code:
sudo passwd root
and, offline, enter a 12-16 character password of sufficient complexity as to not be easily hacked.

And go from there.

My latest find for older 32bit PC is AVL-MXE-2020.12.03-openbox-i386, avsilable at the MX Linux site, or at least it WAS. You may have to try the 12.07 version. It is basically a Base version of MX 32bit with openbox WM. Or, try

Base 32bit antiX as another option. MX goes with XFCE only, uunfortunately.
Best wishes!

I think I'd stick with Debian and do it right in the first place, if I were OP.

I am totally past the root issue, I think the flashing is because its kde plasma desktop.
Do you know for certain there is an Nvidia 6200 linux driver available for 32bit linux?

ok, I installed LXDE desktop and the crazy flashing is gone.
now how about this nvidia driver issue?
I found instructions here and seems to support my card on i386, but running the command just returns the prompt, no buiding of any drivers takes place, and no errors.
https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers

Add buster-backports to your /etc/apt/sources.list, for example:

# buster-backports
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-backports main contrib non-free

Update the list of available packages, then we can install the nvidia-driver package, plus the necessary firmware, from the backports repository:

# apt update
# apt install -t buster-backports nvidia-driver firmware-misc-nonfree

DKMS will build the nvidia module for your system, via the nvidia-kernel-dkms package.
Reboot your system to load the updated driver.

another dead end, there is no such package to build a driver for the system in debian i386

https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/...alldriver.html

here it mentions something about perhaps not using dkms for the compile, but honestly, I am kind of lost here and feel like it just wont work, what do you know about this?

here is an nvidia driver that will work with this card from 2015
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/results/90398/

Thoughts?

I am at the console, but the driver installer keeps complaining X server is running, I tried various web search ideas, how can I get past this?

Can I simply boot to a console window and supposedly X will have never started?

it does not like service lightdm stop, killall x, killall xorg brings back the login

ok, edited grub to just drop to console login, which got past the X error.
But now noveau driver is in the way, how about just uninstalling it?
