How to display distro/kernel as or on desktop background?
What I want to do is display the linux distribution (eg. "Fedora 21") and kernel version (eg. "3.19.7-200.fc21.x86_64") on my desktop background. I know I used to be able to do this, although it may have been a feature on Fedora Core 3 when I last did it. I know this can be done on Windows because my desktop currently displays "Windows 7 / build xxxx" in the lower right hand corner, just above the systray.
In other words, I'd like to see the output of:
$ cat /etc/issue
and
$ uname -r
in the bottom right corner of my desktop background as part of the desktop background--not a separate window. It would be even better if I could omit the second output line of cat /etc/issue, but I won't quibble. Obviously, I could open a terminal and display this information, but I'm wondering if there is an easy and automated way to put this information on the desktop itself.
Thanks!
