Question fuser /dev/dsp show nothing. but no way to play audio ... it happens after some time

i'm using slackware 12.1 - uptodate

not long time ago i installed vlc media player but it may be coincident.

generally after few hours of runing regular desktop apps ( browser, media players etc...) when i try to play something with audio it just fail.

when i check :

Code:
root@darkstar:/etc/rc.d# fuser -a /dev/dsp
/dev/dsp:
root@darkstar:/etc/rc.d#
i guest that it means that nothing is using it.

from kde control center i tried to restart server and i got this message :

Code:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (Device or resource busy)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

before i had this problem only while trying to use ekiga (voip software), sometime it failed at begining of the call to open audio in and out channels.

im tired of doing restarts, and it's difficult to tell what app is doing this. im not sure about vlc player.

restarting Xserver dont help (ctrl+alt+bksp).

so how can i restart this ? thank you
