fglrx 8.443.1 + radeon x1600 + gentoo = black screen

tried the latest (8.443.1) fglrx on gentoo running a radeon x1600. i get a black screen. ctrl + alt + del doesn't work and neither does ctrl + alt + backspace. have to do a hard reset. is anyone else having this problem?? or am i missing something obvious?? will gladly post any requested data. thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Many people are having major problems with this driver, including myself (resolution issues). Try the 7.11 driver or earlier instead
