For general info, google for "tiling window managers". There are several window managers that can do tiling (or that do only tiling, most times).
This kind of window manager makes (usually) intensive usage of the keyboard, and is configured using text files that you have to edit. Windows do not have title bars and can't be moved as freely as in regular window managers. The position of Windows is usually fixed.
Tiling WM's have some strong points and interesting capabilities. They can do things other WM's could hardly dream of, but they are certainly not for everyone.
Awesome, though, is special in that regard. It's still usable with a mouse (though it is not its strong point, certainly) so the learning curve and the urge to learn is not that high as in -let's say- xmonad, ratpoison or dwm.
ps. If all you want is the fancy look of the terminals in the background, you can usually do that in most WM's by configuring it correctly, to eliminate the borders of the relevant windows, fixing them in a given position and moving them to the lowest layer. How that is achieved depends on the concrete WM or desktop you use.
