Can't login to GNOME desktop

I installed and set the desktop to a theme that must be a corrupt file, because it is now preventing the desktop from starting. I can get into GNOME safemode fine, but for some reason it doesn't allow me to unmount drives in the /media folder, from the desktop (the icons don't appear), or from the Disk Mounter applet (which some reason won't be added to the panel). How can I restore GNOME to default settings so I can login to my normal desktop?

One particularly ham-fisted way to do it is to delete ~/.gnome. When you next log in, GNOME will assume you're logging into GNOME for the first time, and create a new .gnome directory will default settings.

A slightly less severe way of doing the same thing is to rename ~/.gnome something like ~/dotgnomeBACKUP. Then, you can go back or you can try and tranfer over whatever settings you can salvage.
