Can't log into console, dual boot Ubuntu freezes

Dual boot freezes after choosing Ubuntu
Okay, I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 installed.

Getting to the o/s screen is no problem, nor is running Windows. But if I choose Ubuntu, one of three things happens:

1) it runs smoothly, I log in, no problem.
2) I get the dreaded "low graphics mode" window box.
3) It runs till almost the login screen, then freezes with a split window display of a badly pixelated Ubuntu graphic, twice, side by side, and I have to reboot.

I never know which one of these is going to occur. This happened when I was running the ATI onboard 3300 video from my motherboard, it's happened with a (beta) driver I got initially for my nVidia card, and it's still happening with the full driver I got for the nVidia card that the company put out just a few weeks ago.

My system:
AMD Phenom II Quad core 3.0
nVidia GeForce 6600
4G DDR3
Xorg version = 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7

If any one of the three happened regularly I could fix it but this is driving me nuts.

Note: If I try to stop the xserver (like to install a new driver), I get the dual pixelated display and it freezes. I also cannot boot into recovery mode. It does the same thing.

Note: I also cannot login to the recovery mode for the kernel and I cannot stop kdm or gdm. If I do either of the latter, again, I get the pixelated screen and can't get into console mode.

I've been to the Ubuntu forums and looked through google. The answers there seem to be focusing on what happens after you get to the login screen, which is not my problem.

It doesn't look good, as the following URL shows:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...within results. Also, http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...80/+bug/313306. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

You may wish to consider two things: 1) trying MEPIS, and 2) using a separate hard drive for each OS. Simplicity is the key for me!

Actually, I was considering just that. I've used SimplyMepis before and liked it. And I have a habit of backing up data on disks, since I like to "poke" Linux till it breaks. :P

Thanks for the info and the idea.
