can't enter password in command line

Trying to upgrade to 20.04 from 19.10, I get to the point in the command line that requires a password and the system doesn't respond; the cursor just sits there and when I try to type, nothing happens. I have been having the same problem with my bank account password, so I think there may be a connexion. The bank problem has been going on for awhile.

Password entries on the command line are not echoed. You won't see anything happen while you're typing.

Don't have a clue about the bank account password. You should call your bank about that.

As already said: on the console the password isn't echo'd in ANY way.
Only after you pressed the Enter you'll find out if you typed the correct one.
