) on an IDE drive with an SATA drive attached.

I found some help here:

I decided to install Ubuntu 7.04 on the IDE using the Alternate CD with text based install. Using this I was able to load LILO instead of GRUB. Now LILO gives me a black screen during or after loading (I never used LILO before so I don't know the process when it fails.
