AMD64 SATA and IDE GRUB problem

Hey,
Here is my problem: GRUB fails to load when I install Ubuntu and Debian (cause they are so different ) on an IDE drive with an SATA drive attached.
Quote:
GRUB Loading stage1.5.

GRUB loading, please wait...
Ends there.
I found some help here: http://techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=50809 where "just brew it!" has a similar problem with my mobo, http://www.dfi.com.tw/Product/xx_pro...YPE=MB&SITE=US which uses a standard VIA southbridge chipset for SATA control. just brew it! suggests to use LILO. I decided to install Ubuntu 7.04 on the IDE using the Alternate CD with text based install. Using this I was able to load LILO instead of GRUB. Now LILO gives me a black screen during or after loading (I never used LILO before so I don't know the process when it fails.
