Sounds like it is getting more and more like windowz... Stuff we did not use before now forced down our throat...
I am kidding, but its kinda true...
I am referring to Akonadi... For the last 3 years, I never used such a thing and was using Kontact (Kmail, Contacts and Akregator) with ease but now I am "forced" to use Akonadi and I cant even use it because it generates tons of errors and does not even start. Result: I cant access my address book or use Kontact like I used to do.
So basically, I am searching for a way to disable/uninstall/destroy/disintegrate akonadi. I dont want and I dont see why I would have to use any kind of database servers (such as MySQL or ProgreSQL) and misc server things like akonadi JUST to retrieve/store basic info in a single file (contacts or whatever requires akonadi).
Any ways to do that? Will I have to migrate to a third party PIM solution (Thunderbird/Lightning.. Evolution, ...) ??
it seems that removing or disabling that akonadi crap in any way will break kontact therefore not allowing me to access any of my contacts, emails, calendar, notes, etc etc, so in other words it is for me (managing some projects for friends and school stuff) catastrophic loss..... also a guy (a4z) on the second thread you gave me seems to be on the exact same page as I am... basically I am moving away from kde with extreme disappointment and frustration.. I did not migrate from windowz to linux to experience the same type of "we will push it down u'r throat" like micro$oft does to its customers....
unless somebody found a way to bring back Kontact (the whole suite) the way it was in Slackware 12 or KDE 3.5... I am getting rid of that crap pretty soon. Anyways the performance of KDE4 is no where close to KDE3
Im sorry to end up on a negative note like that, but its very frustrating when the only answers you find are "oh sorry you are stuck with it because the developpers decided so" or "you need to use that because we decided it was better".... this is opensource and free software (linux world) after all, nobody should force you in any way to do what you dont want to. There is tons of alternatives after all...
Meh, that's the strength of Linux - if you don't like something (for whatever reason) there's an alternative. Since you are looking for a solution for multiple clients, have you considered OpenSuse +Groupware? I haven't used Groupware for years, but I always found it easy to use and a very good client and server.
im surprised you mention that I am searching for solution on many clients... I guess you found some of my posts or thrreads somewhere on LQ!
ANyways, have you heard of Kolab? I guess so. Have you tried it? Basically, what I;m trying to do is to have a central server where my laptop's PIM solution can save/retrieve (sync) my PIM data to and from... at least 2 reasons for this...
1-I am planning to eventually get a smartphone (iphone, Nexus 1, etc...) and would like both my laptop and the phone to sync to the same source.
2-The machine where I'll install the PIM solution is already setup to backup itself and is a good hardware so I assume it is more reliable than my laptop....
this is why I am trying to eliminate the need for processes/servers/services running on each machines to process my PIM data. If I can get a mean to disable akonadi and have Kontact seek data on my server that would be nice.
Well that akonadi stupid crap is really getting on my nerves... after a few weeks of quietness and no problems, here's the monster back again causing all kind of troubles.
Since last time I wrote on this thread, akonadi has never been working but nevertheless was not causing any major problems (only annoying error report and complaints) but since a few days ago, kontact (and kmail for that matter) are completely un-usable and crash/freeze all the time. I cant even type an email, it freezes on me.
I wonder why the choice was not given to users to either use that crap or be like before, a simple resource in kontact, nothing else???
I am so frustrated, everything was so fine with KDE in version 3, I feel KDE 4 ( I am using stock 4.4.3 from slack 13.1) is getting bloated and packed with cancerous garbage....
Questions about this Akonadi thing - I agree, it doesn't seem to be anything useful (other than use up resources) - so I don't see the need for it. I got Kontact to work fine - it is a bit slower, but I am still using my old resources.
I get an error message saying that msql-driver needs to be installed for it to work correctly, and then says: "the following drivers are installed: [name] [name] msql"
I don't like this new KDE - innovation for the sake of innovation sucks.
Can't we have something that just works, like KDE 3.x?
I, too, am thinking of switching to something else - like said above, I do not use MS-crap, but KDE is definitely getting there fast...
I am extremely disappointed - I have been using KDE since it was first launched...
re-reading my last post here and i do realize how emotional i was... but it does not matter i still believe what was said.
KrlVorster, glad to see that i am not the only one thinking this!
I guess if i had a major improvement to suggest to the KDE team it would be to re-think the whole system and adopt a modular approach... if a customer (user) wants to use a certain feature, so be it! install it and dont bother the other 5000000 users out there! Plus it should be the same for options: do you want to use akonadi or the standard res file like before? then compile & install and configure accordingly.
we're linux users, we dont need to be told how to do it, and we certainly dont need stuff pushed down our throat.
...its very frustrating when the only answers you find are "oh sorry you are stuck with it because the developpers decided so" or "you need to use that because we decided it was better".... this is opensource and free software (linux world) after all, nobody should force you in any way to do what you dont want to.
Yes, so you have the Freedom to use that Open Source code and take the project in the direction that you choose, with your own resources. The developers have to move projects forward in some way; a project cannot stagnate for years without any changes or improvements or they (the projects) just end up being abandoned. The developers are implementing features which they chose (or features which their employers chose to implement), not what every single person wants or what one group or another wants.
Nothing is being shoved down your throat. Stay on an older Slackware release. Take the code and fork it. Change to a different PIM solution. Pay Kontact people to implement a method that doesn't require a database backend. You have many options; this is opensource and free software (linux world) after all, nobody should force you in any way to do what you don't want to.
Yes well - did a run the sysmon - I now have 7 instances (different PIDs) running on mysql...
When I start up Kontact, it runs the Akondadi selftest 4 or five times.
Have a feeling I'm switching to Xfce - tried it the other night - light weight, but quite fast. I will miss the ability to configure my look-&-feel like I've done with KDE, but I agree - KDE is becoming bloated for now reason.
"The developers have to move projects forward in some way; a project cannot stagnate for years without any changes or improvements or they (the projects) just end up being abandoned."
-> This is just nonsense - the previous Kontact (the working one) also had bugs - rather fix those, than decide to go off on a tangent that no-body really wanted in the first place.
I agree - keep it modular - or does KDE have a hidden agenda with the guys over at M$???
The developers have to move projects forward in some way
This is EXACTLY the rationale behind MS market strategies and so many other software companies.
I disagree to the bone on this statement. In my opinion, this will either kill or severely injure Linux. I have been using Linux, for its performance, lightweight, the fact that it has always been capable of running on older & low end machines, and plain simple: its design. I love the way Linux distros are built, especially slackware, that I religiously use every day.
Now if I am indirectly forced to bloat it up with a DE that, IMO, contradicts directly the Linux & Slackware philosophies, what's the point? Might as well jump in Windows 7 right away.
The only thing I sincerely hope its that the KDE team are not solely trying to seduce Windows & mac users...
KISS: Keep it simple stupid! : This has been one of slackware's core value since its creation. How can a DE that has tons of +/- useless features be part of an OS that promotes simplicity and stability as "paramount"?? The Plasma things in KDE4? Akonadi? All the visual effects...
As far as I know, simplicity means something is build or executed in a way that it is easy to understand or explain, and that has minimal steps or processed involved in performing a task.
Process/Activity: KDE old's resources files
Task: Deliver and store addresses and contact infos, emails, calendar, etc.
Result: It used low resources & it worked.
Process/Activity: Akonadi + X mysql processes + Mysql database + Akonadi resource manager
Task: Deliver and store addresses and contact infos, emails, calendar, etc.
Result: It uses tons of resources, create other problems & it doesn't work.
That's embracing the KISS principle? Again, why complicating things just to perform a simple task... 99% of linux users are home users, like me or anybody else in this forum. We dont need complicated processes to retrieve emails, store addresses and calendar items. We dont have companies and businesses that depends on our PIM management processes. We need something simple & straightforward because we have simple & straightforward needs.
Again, I am just expressing my opinions ... I believe in Linux, I believe in Slackware & I believe in KDE. I just wish and hope things will get straight in the near future.
If I offended or pissed anybody, I sincerely apologize.
