I have this pretty dark monitor and even with the monitor's brightness turned to maximum, I still need a little extra gamma from the X server or the graphic card (nvidia). I usually run a "xgamma -gamma 1.7" when using the desktop, and a "xgamma -gamma 3.5" when watching videos.
I can run compiz just fine, but I can't adjust the brightness, xgamma won't work because I guess compiz bypasses this part of the X server. So my desktop is as dark as the batcave and unusable, I had to revert to X with no compiz. Not like I miss it a lot but I have an amazing 3D card and you know, I'd like to use that power.
So, is there a way to boost the brightness using compiz, for the entire desktop, not just active/inactive windows?
With Xgl, I don't get the same options and choices in nvidia-settings that I get using the X server, it's weird.
For instance, I don't have an option to adjust the brightness or the gamma, which I have when I'm using X.
How come my options are so different whether I'm using Xgl or Xorg as a display manager?
I do get a few error messages though when starting nvidia-settings from the console as su (same with regular user) that I'll have to look into:
ERROR: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this Display.
ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA GPUs on ':0.0'.
ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA Frame Lock Devices on ':0.0'.
ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA VCSCs on ':0.0'.
