Hello!

I'm looking into getting an IT job that wants me to have 2 certs out of a slew of choices:
MCSE, CCNP, CCDP, CISE, CCSP, RHCT, RHCE, Certified NetAnalyst, or equivilent...

And to me, it seems that I would have the easiest time buffing up on and taking the RHCE/RHCT exams. However, I'm not suggesting these to be a breeze. So..

Anyone wanna tell me how long it took them to get one of these certs and any pointers on prepping for em? And, what's a realistic time table I should set for obtaining them?

I bought a pair of RHCE and RHCT books in August, i picked them up for the first time at the middle of November, i started the RHCE fast track course just after the middle of November, I had my RCHE a week after the middle RHCE. But like you'd see in me talking about it in the thread I started, i *still* feel i have a patchy knowledge of redhat, yet i passed with 96% and only 2 others in a class of 12 got it (i think) half the class didn't even get RHCT, by a long shot...

Our instructor said he hates the fast track course though, it's kinda like if you know it already you're fine, but you can't really learn much from it. IF you want course, do the RHCT course first, RH133, then the RH253, then the RHCE exam by itself a few weeks later. As long as you're not calling blanks after the RHCT, i'm sure you personally could finish it comfortably end to end in two months, maybe six weeks. Note also is you are destined for the RHCE there's no point at all doing the RHCT exam first as you will repeat the entire thing inside the RHCE, which is kinda annoying if you've already paid to do RHCT by itself.

you've got CCSP there though... that's above the CCNA which i'm alledgedly studying for too, and that is hard enough for me (for a guy who flew through RHCE). CCSP is going to way way way harder that RHCE, and i'd bet MCSE is also a lot lot harder too.

MCSE is very hard. There are 12(?) modules to pass before you get the cert. If ound the hardest part was understanding the question - Microsoft don't really like asking questions in plain English.

That really sounds hopeful! I did check out the Cisco options, they seem to be more expensive and although I think I will eventually go for them, I think for the comfort and ease of getting a job, if they will accept something more 'linux' than anything else I think I will have more luck in that area.

I guess we'll see I'll be applying Monday morning, so I figure I'll probably know by the end of the week whether I'll be needing these or not. Will keep ya posted.

Looking around the web and reading a lot of different websites that have a 'study guide' I'm confused now.

Do I have to take the RHCE "course" from Redhat? I guess a better way to ask this is:
Does paying the cost of the course cover the cost of the exam, I see they are the same cost. If not, and the 2 costs are seperate; should I pay the $750 (USD) for the course, or should I just get a book and pay to take the test?

Well i don't know just how confident you are with redhat... it all depends. On my course there were a load of people with literally decades of unix experience and such, and initially i felt i was well below average for the course. by the end of the first day, they clearly didn't ahve a clue about redhat despite claiming to have been poking it for a few years.

you can book the course and exam seperately if you want. If you want to take a bet on it, i'd suggest maybe doing the day long exam and seeing where you come out of it. you may well end up with the RHCT anyway, so doing the rhce part of the course would be pointless.

So depends how confident you are really, but *I* thought the exam was frustratingly simple, so i'd guess you should rate my opinion against how much you think i know about Redhat... and i know for a fact i've shown myself up a whole heap of times on here about petty things i got very very wrong. And there are plenty of questions on here, like BIND that I would generally still not touch with a barge pole, yet i'm certified by redhat to know how to configure it...

I think I understand the classes versus test now. I guess my last bit of confusion is:
From what I read the RHCE exam includes an RHCT portion. So, upon successfully completing the RHCE exam, do you get both an RHCT cert and an RHCE, or do you have to take the RHCT seperately? I know it's a redundant cert, but the job that I'm looking to get requires 2 certs, and these 2 are both listed.

rhce 100% includes rhce, you don't get both. well, you would have two certs and two registrations in redhat's db (I guess). but i do not have an rhct, but i have done 100% of the exam, and passed it. You can say you do have an rhct and you're not lying, but if it's that petty and you think they might not count them well you're heading in the wrong direction i think.
