Studying for the RHCE...need some advice...

Hello there,

I guess this is a question for current RHCE.

I work as a systems administrator for my company for about 3 years now.

We currently have various Sun Solaris machines and Red Hat Enterprise Linux machines.

I'm not going to lie to you. We have WAY more Solaris than RHEL. But it is enough to where I'm administering RHEL daily.

I recintly started studying for my RHCE with this book

http://www.amazon.com/Certified-Engi...4185190&sr=1-1

I've been reading and doing the labs and going over them twice. But I can't help to think that It's no enough. I mean I administer RHEL systems (mostly Solaris...but as I said before...we have enough RHEL systems that I am administering them everyday.); but I don't want to take the test (especially since my company dosen't have a budget for training) and fail....

My question...Red Hat has a week long class

https://www.redhat.com/courses/rh300_rhce_rapid_track_course_and_rhce_exam/

My question...is this class worth it? I know that it's probably my nerves talking but I'm tempted to take the class.

Thoughts?

If it's anything like when I recently took a (week long) course to prepare me for taking my LPI 1 & 2, it was the best decision I ever made. I thought I knew a fair bit about administering a GNU/Linux system, taking this course showed the areas where I needed to improve upon in order to successfully pass the exam. You could also try seeking out practice RHCE exams and see how you get on with those.

Good point...

I have heard everything from "They won't show you anything you don't already know" to "This class is the reason I passed".

Although I know that taking the class is no guarantee that I will pass the RHCE; I assume that the sucess rate goes up if you take the class...

I want to take the class...but the $3K price tag is the only thing holding me back...i mean...if it's not worth it; then why bother...but if it's genuinely helpful I am willing to pay for it...

Thoughts/Ideas/Comments/Concerns?

My question...is this class worth it?
I took RH300 before sitting for the RHCE exam, and for me personally it was well worth it. I would caution that taking the class is no guarantee that you'll pass the exam, though -- IIRC, in my class of twelve only three of us passed.

I'm sure you've heard it before, but it is important that you have all of the skills here covered: http://www.redhat.com/certification/rhce/prep_guide/

Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, I figured that taking the class isn't a guarantee...but I'm glad to hear that it helped you!

Ouch 3 out of 12...

I read that the success rate is less than 50% for first time takers...

That's why I'm considering their "success pack"

https://www.redhat.com/courses/rh300....html?id=RH300

So if I don't pass the first time..then I get a "free" (technically not free) retake...

I just did some math and I think that I am going to stick with self study for a while (that and the fact that I work with it everyday )

Their "success pack" gets you the 4 day class with the test. And if you don't pass; you get to take the test again at no additional charge. This costs about $3,525

Just the RHCE alone is $800.

So even if one would take the test twice it would have only have cost $1600...

I can't cost justify $3,525 if I get the same amount of chances for $1600...

Thoughts?
