Studying for LPIC - Level 1 (101 & 102)

I have recently begun studying for my LPIC level 1 and have purchased:

LPIC-1: Linux Professional Institute Certification Study Guide: (Exams 101 and 102) by Roderick W. Smith

Just wondering if there was anyone here who is also currently studying for this and could share some insight / advice or tips. Wouldn't mind a study buddy / peer as well to help keep me plugging away at this.

A little background about me - been working in IT for about 10 years now and as a system administrator for the last 8 years. Worked with RHEL and currently doing admin work with customers using IBM's variant of .nix AIX.

Looking forward to hearing from everyone out there - good luck in your studies!

Thanks in advance!

Hi I'm also studying for LPIC-1.

These are the resources I use:
- from IBM online Learn Linux, 101: A roadmap for LPIC-1
- bookstore LPIC-1: Linux Professional Institute Certification Study Guide: (Exams 101 and 102
- bookstore LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell

Hey michielv,

Thanks for responding - are you currently studying for your exam?

I have the same book as you do and am using that as my study guide / road map to get me through this material.

If you are studying how often are you reading or practicing during the week?

Thanks for the reply!

Hello,

Because Linux is my operating system at home, I use it on a daily basis.
I read for the exam 2 to 3 times a week.
Most of the time a read a part and then experiment with it, because if you practice you will remember longer what you did.

I started to read for LPIC-1 not necessarily to do the exam, just out of curiosity (because I like Linux a lot) and to learn more about Linux, and to know what my current skills are.

I haven't decided yet if I will do the exam, but I think I will.
I will keep you informed if I will.
The exams are quite expensive, 160 $ per exam.

Kind regards

Just finished chapter 2 in the book and have worked through the examples. So far so good - not too shabby.

I am running Ubuntu 9.04 on my Media center and am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my webserver for my consulting IT business on the side. Both give me ample opportunities to play with Linux and all it's toys.

I will be doing the exam and the price of $160.00 is quite a bit cheaper than any of the other Red Hat or IBM exams for Linux on the market today.

Keep me posted - thanks again and good luck!

Congratulations Michielv!!!!!!

Thank you for sharing your results - you performed well and earned a nice score. How long have you been studying for? It's only been a couple of weeks since I started tackling the book but did you pass because of your experience working with Linux (Mint) at home alone?

Anyhow - that's an incredible achievement - once again congratulations!

I will let you know how my studies are coming along and if I can pass so quickly as you have done.

Thanks for setting the bar high which motivates me even more...

Hello linuxlearner17,

I studied on it for 2 months, I think an average of at least 4 hours a week (including exercises).
I have only Linux experience at home for a couple of years (at least 4 year I think).
I have Unix experience at work but as a normal user, not as a sysadmin.
I will now start learning for the 102 exam.

Kind regards,
Michielv

Hi,
I picked up the same book and have been casually reading through it. From what Michielv posted, I will be more serious and give the exam a try. I'm currently at chapter three. To Linuxlearner, looking forward to be your study buddy.

Hi njukks,

Thanks for the response. I am now on the same chapter as you and definitely welcome you as a study buddy / partner on this road to the LPIC...

Post any questions or examples you have completed on here and we can go from there. Or if you want you can PM me if there are any questions.

This is great - even more incentive to go out and tackle this exam.

WE CAN do this!

Let me know how studying is going - take care and talk to you soon

All the best!

In the middle of chapter 3 in my LPI book - how is studying coming along njukks?

Fared ok in my test assessments at the end of the chapters 15 and 14 out of 20 in both chapters 1 & 2 respectively.

Drop me a line and let me know of your progress...

Hi there, sorry for the long time to reply. Had left for a while. I guess by now you have already cleared the third chapter. I'm right now brushing through it to refresh and proceed. I also fared well in the first two chapters but for me my concern is remembering the command options and their usage. I think I will have to reread the chapters once I clear the 5th chapter.
Do you have a trick you use to remember the many options that are introduced? I am contemplating disabling my menus and manipulating my devices and file system from cmd line. I dnt trust my memory too much!
