I've used this approach (although I ran VMWare under Linux) and it works perfectly.

No additional information should be needed. It really is as simple as running the USB installation script under Incognito and then reboot or start it on any other computer (which can boot from USB of course).

That it's possible to boot from the USB drive in VMWare indicates that the USB drive probably is OK. Do you have another computer to test it on?
In my experience, some systems have problems booting from USB, my own workstation included. So the problem could be with your system. One way to rule that out is if you can boot some other Linux distro from USB. For that this tool might come in handy:
