geforce 6600 causes instability. power or agp related?

I've recently installed an nvidia geforce 6600 and although it all seems to be working i'm experiencing severe stability problems. my first thought was a lack of power, but i've also read that instability can be agp related (my motherboard only supports agp 4x). Is there a simple way to tell the difference?
(I've tried unplugging my cd-burner, floppy drive etc but to no avail).

my setup:
AMD Athlon 2200
Asus A7N266-VM
NVidia Geforce 6600
Suse 9.2
400 Watt PSU
latest (7174) nvidia drivers.

cheers,
andy.

Maybe it is an AGPGART related issue. Try adding
Option "NvAGP" "1"
in your xorg.conf, in the Device section under
driver "nvidia"
and make sure agpgart is not loaded (/sbin/lsmod)

thanks very much, i stuck that option in and it seems to have fixed the stability problems, so it's definitely agp related. however, it kills performance. indeed, there doesn't seem to be any difference between option "NvAGP" "1" and option "NvAGP" "0". my motherboard is based around the nforce chipset so i would expect nvidia's agp to work with it.
also, doing 'lsmod | grep agp' lists both nvidia_agp and agpgart no matter what the option is set to. i'm guessing this is wrong? how do i stop agpgart being loaded?

thanks again.

To stop it try:
modprobe -r agpgart
or
rmmod agpgart
You should find a way to stop it from autoloading.
If it cannot be removed because it's being used, go to console mode first:
init 3
unload it and then go to graphical mode again (init 5)

thanks, i'll give that a try when i get home.
assuming it works, any idea how to stop it being loaded permenantly, ie without doing 'rmmod agpgart' every time i boot?
and similarly, does anyone know how i could get sax2 to include the 'option "NvAGP" "1"' line itself since it autogenerates xorg.conf?

thanks.

Hmmmm.....Although I 'm from europe (and in europe suse is #1) I don't use SuSE. I don't like automating everything and not knowing what is done. I can tell you how to do it on slackware but not on SuSE. SO the answer is No. Have you rebooted the machine and is it still loading, or have you just killed X.
Search the net or start a thread in SuSE forum of LQ, if the problem persists.
