I'm a very new Newbie who seems to have fallen foul of the Mandrake 10 Official Release. I had installed Mandrake 9.1 (which seemed to auto-configure my alcatel speedtouch modem with no probs). I then decided to try Mandrake 10 (Big Mistake).

So far I have reinstalled Mandrake 10 with the LSB checkbox ticked, I downloaded a microcode file called mgmt.0 and stuck it on a floppy then tried to configure an internet connection.

When mandrake 10 asked for the microcode I inserted the floppy and the data on it seemed to be read but I still can't connect.

HELP!!!

Where do I go from here and does anyone know if the differences between 9.1 and 10 make it worthwhile.

I thought only MS screwed new software up this bad.

i have problems with 10 in that when it boots it always fails to initialize my ethernet port. and when i want to connect to the internet i have to remove my connections and create them again. but it only takes a few seconds, it isn't that bad. hopefully they will fix it, though.

if your modem worked with 9.1 it should work with 10. try removing your connections and re-installing them. check you get the settings correct.

i have the same problem, when i used mandrake 9.2, my speedtouch usb modem worked perfect, then i upgraded to mandrake 10.0 powerpack, and suddenly my modem doesnt seem to work.

The problem is probably that the microcode file (mgmt.o) only works with a lower kernel than the one used in mandrake 10.0, hopefully somebody has a solution for this, or hopefully alcatel will come with a new microcode soon.

If anybody could help me (and the other ones with this problem) i would be very thankfull

I too have Mandrake 10 and the Alcatel Speedtouch modem. I was runing round in circles trying to find a way to gt it to connect. I found a suggestion in another forum thatworked for me - go to Control Centre and open New Connection under Networks, and then set up an ADSL connection, identifying Alcatel, your location (UK for me), the telephone line supplier (BTelecom), PPPoA and then your ISP and their details etc. After rebooting I had a connection and it connects automatically when I boot the computer.

hello, after alot of trying i just discovered something very simple, you can just start mandrake 10.0 with kernel 2.4.2, this is a standard option in the bootmanager. If you just start youre mandrake with that instead of the standard kernel 2.6.2 then the modem works perfectly. If you deleted that option while installing or something, just "reinstall" and use the option upgrade instead of full install and then you will have the option back.

I am totally new to this Linux thing and have carried out just about all options in getting mu Speedtouch modem to work. I tried the different boot option (listed as a bunch of numbers in the boot screen: 2.4xxxx or something?) but computer won't boot. I got lots of errors, possibly because I installed Mandrake 10 on an SATA disc and older kernels don't like this?

All I want is a quick and easy way of getting my USB modem to work. Has anyone got any more ideas on this?

While I am here, how do you change the refresh rate for your monitor with Mandrake, and where is the "file manager"?

I cant help you with that sata stuff cause i dont know that mutch about linux and hardware support.

(im not english so if i say something wrong about the filemanager or i wrongly understand the word filemanager, just ignore this part :P)

There are 2 kind of filemanagers, there's the one thats being used standard by kde, this I personally use just by clicking on the home (the picture thats on youre desktop) dont know the exact word thats under it.

There's also nautilius, i think thisone is more like this computer in windows XP.
You can find it somewhere in youre "start"menu, sry i cant give you the exact location but im working in windows right now.

I just got into linux, and I've been trying to get my Alcatel Speedtouch modem to work on MDK 10, but seem to be having a lot of problems. At first it asked for mgmt.o but when I managed to get that file and put it where it was supposed to be, it didn't work.

Now it's asking for mgmt_rev4.o, but I don't know where to get this one.

If any1 can help me, I'd appreciate it.

To russraff, a file manager is the program you use to look at files. The default with kde is konqueror (the 'home' icon), with gnome it is nautilus. But if want you can use any of the internet browsers, galeon, mozilla, opera etc.

This is the site I have been following, too. I think I will just get an adsl router instead...

I have a silver usb Speedtouch 330 adsl modem. It works perfectly with Mdk10 Community Edition (I am using the powerpack) but, after several attempts, it still won't work with Mdk 10 Official - I am using a 2.6.x kernel (currently 2.6.3-14mdk custom but have also used a 2.6.5 kernel with Mdk10CE).

I think something was maybe changed in the official Mdk 10 that didn't need it maybe? One difference between the CE and Official Edition Powerpacks is that the Official one includes two microcodes (possibly depending which particular speedtouch 330 is detected (as there seem to be 3 or 4 different 'revisions'))

Hopefully Mandrake 10.1 will use the same Speedtouch software/code that 10CE does

while searching for a solution to get my green stingray to work, I stumbled across a quick and easy solution that worked for me.
Unfortunately, this guy who wrote it, called SonicK (thank you btw), wrote it entirely in French.
So here's my (free) translation :

I have written this post because you can find a lot of these guides on the web, mostly those who say you should recompile the kernel... The method explained here is simple and worked for me while staying with kernel 2.6...

- First I tried to do a "normal" installation with drakconf (with pppoatm), without success (like you I suppose...), but it's important because you need the files that are created when you do this.

-Next you have to verify if the speedtouch module is present in the kernel modules (by default it is)

-you have to install the package pppoatm. Verify if pppoatm.so is in the directory /usr/lib/pppd/plugin Edit: With me it was in /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.3, but you have to check it...

-Put the mgmt.o file in the folder: /usr/share/speedtouch

-Now we are going to edit the 4 following files:

- At this stage, the modem should initialize (blinking leds, then fixed). If this is the case, test if you internet connection is allright

- Now you should establish the connection while booting.
Therefore, it is enough to write a little bash script.

#reinitialize the modem
modem_run -k -f /usr/share/speedtouch/mgmt.o

#launch the connection
pppd call adsl

place the script in /usr/share/speedtouch/ with the file mgmt.o I hope this was helpful Edit: I would expect to call the script at the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local...

- Reboot and normally, the connection launches while starting up. (However, with me, it is a little slow in launching). Also, mandrake has a problem with closing the connection when shutting down the system, will find out why. Edit: No problem here, works really good and fast...
