Your favourite Open Source Software!

We are currently compiling a list of the most popular and most used Open Source software.

What is your favourite piece of Open Source Software(excluding OpenOffice and The Gimp)?

Actually one of my favorites is "The Gimp" so why would you want to exclude some of the most popular open source software available?

Perhaps you need to go search our Members Choice Awards where members vote for their favorite software. There's a sticky in Linux - General that links you to this instead of asking questions for members to answer in which they've already answered by voting in polls, that we hold each year and will be coming up soon again.

They are the most popular and didn't want a list of everyone saying those two. Just trying to get a broader idea of the use of Open Source software across Linux and Windows users.

I have quite a long list of my Debian app recommendations which I compiled recently and it has some lesser known but very useful Open Source software, but I won't link it here since it would be considered advertising.

As tricky said, try the LQ.org members' choice polls so that you get a broad idea of what OSS is more popular in the community. When you click on the link though, be sure to choose "from the beginning" to get all the polls. Otherwise you get only a few from the top...

Kwrite
Kate
Emacs
The Gimp
Open Office
Gaim
Firestarter Firewall
Guarddog Firewall
nMap
Ohh and Linux ;-)

There are so many. If you're looking for people's favourite then I suggest you try and break it down into different sections;

TextEditors
Security Programs
Office Suites
Internet Browsers
etc...

Well OO is one of my favorite and most used. KDEPIM is the other. Years ago when I had some bad managers I started my own CYA file and it has been with me ever since. I have went back and plugged in dates from old paper calendars and pitched them so I have meny years worth of calendar data. If I want to see pictures of our 5th wedding anniversary I go to that date and click on the link to the pics, its become sort of an index to my data.

Xine, Firefox, XMMS, Audacity, GIMP :P , OpenOffice.org :P , Apophysis (although it doesn't have a *nix port), Azureus, Enigma, Frozen Bubble, gcc, and KDEvelop (although I've only used the Icon maker :P ).

There's a list of more than 20 OSS that I will eventually test like: Blender, Beagle, and LegoDRAW.
