Sean Connery will always be "The" James Bond, IMHO.
Second would be Pierce Brosnan, followed by Roger Moore and then George Lazenby.
A far, far, far last place would go to Daniel Craig. The worst casting in the
history in the cinema, imho.
I think Connery was the best. The Fleming stories, especially the earlier ones, were quite dark, and Connery captured that.
I really liked Roger Moore, but I always felt that he was playing Bond as Bond would have been if Simon Templar had decided to become a spy, instead of becoming the Robin Hood of Modern Crime. (I also remember seeing the Ivanhoe series, which was on US TV early Sunday afternoons after we got home from church.)
By the by, I am a big Saint fan. I have read all of Leslie Charteris's Saint stories and really enjoyed Roger Moore's ITV Saint TV series, which resides on my HDD even as I type this..
Brief results thus far, but it seems to indicate to me two things (1) I need not bother seeing any of the newer Bond movies, and (2) they probably shouldn't be making any new Bond movies.
Seems like if they tried to remake all the Eastwood westerns it would be a galactic fail too.

Connery was the best, followed by Daniel Craig, then Moore. I agree that Bond was supposed to have a dark side, and Connery and Craig, to me, captured that. Brosnan was smarmy and flip. Bond might smile, but he never smirked, and Brosnan was all smirk. The rest didn't play in enough Bond films to make an impression.
I think it depends a lot on whether you've read the books: Connery was not only great in the films, but closest to the character in the books. For me, Moore was Simon Templar, The Saint.
