Can I use ifcfg-bond to bond VPN tuns?

I am wondering if I can create an ifcfg-bond with the bonding module to bond a pair of VPN tuns. I have seen examples of doing this with taps.

What would be the pros/cons of this approach if I wanted to either:
  • load balance a pair of network connections
  • provide some level of redundancy on the connection
considering I don't control the routed network between the vpn endpoints.

Is there any merit to using a tap instead of a tun in this application?
