Setting a root password doesn't allow root logins via gdm, nor does editing gdm.conf, but rather after that administration....login window.....allow local administrator=yes

Spending a little less time at the computer, and more on my other interests. Reading "Wolf Hall", a novel about Thomas Cromwell.

yummie, pita!

sudo passwd root
I think the "root" is superfluous in this case: "passwd" changes the user's password so a simple "sudo passwd" should do to set the root password.

NO.

Only;

GRUB2
Xsplash & Usplash (both)
Root User Policy
UUID
GNOME theme mechanics
GDM Themeability
GNOME keyring
Gconf
No 4 Wallpapers in Nautilus
Metacity > Emerald; can't set easily
Usplash is basically impossible to theme
System Administarton can be difficult and non-vanilla at times

I have fixed almost all of these though:- I think I'm going to make a thread and document some of these idiosyncrasy fixes that I have found. Yeah! Ubuntu users could pitch in their discoveries as well.

Pros:

GNOME is awesome (on Arch it sucks)
Debian Base
Best Programs already installed
apt-get the world
desktop files + defaults set
Things just work (like compiz for example)
Amazing hardware recognition
Bleeding edge; yet stable
Documentation
Speed (IMHO on my system anyway)
Support
Forums
Community
Great Firefox integration

Nice. I am working towards becoming a Senior Member. That's my goal. In fact, if I ever get any money, I would like to become a Contributing Member, because this site has helped me out A LOT.

Do I have strange goals?

@leopard
I've been a contributing member, almost from the day I started using LQ. LQ was there when I first starting using Linux, when there were very few resources for the new Linux user. Now, I don't need to ask much, but, it's nice to know LQ is here. Besides, I think it's time Jeremy traded in the old pink Cadillac with the huge chrome grill. It's embarrassing when he parks in front of Steve Ballmer's house and blows that strange sounding horn at 3AM.
