I have tested for fun Ubuntu and I was pondered by numerous questions regarding this distribution.
First, the boot time invite you to rather not much possibilities. It looks to me like a Windows boot start. By default it looks very much like a Windows start. Just the Logo Ubuntu is there. There is also no single logo of Penguin. You know, that Unix-like thing: Linux.
Well, Ubuntu boots and there is weird page which ask you for Internet connection. Sounds to me strange to already bother me with password.
Luckily that I didn't add my credit card number instead by mistake.
Are lurky deamons doing their jobs behind?
Then, Ubuntu asks for installation on the whole disk. Luckily that I did not press Enter without reading
Well, after all those steps, one boot to the fantastic Gnome desktop.
Awesome. Nice. Superbe, but rather slow, compared to my previous Unix/BSD and "Debian" system. There are really lot of things going on in the background. OK, not important.
Installations. Let's add some programs, it works fairly well like a Debian system. But some weird things, where is xpaint? scrot gone, many X11 applications removed from repos. Many slight terminal programmes removed. Removed, since it is not necessary. Is the power of GUI still Linux? Where is scrot? Where are all thousand packages that are light, professional, and efficient? Many are gone. Have a look at vim too. Sounds to me really weird, this spirit of complexity and lack of freedom. It looks like forcing users to install softwares that are going into one direction : Windows, Mac or Android like systems.
Default CC compiler: GCC.
Next,... the best of the best. Firefox starts first with Google. Wow, google the giant. Did ever https://duckduckgo.com/ exist or Ubuntu has nothing to do already with opensource/GNU/...?
SystemD, Avahi, Pulseaudio,... well you have no single choice for that.
Next, the best of the best. By default you have a beautiful desktop with AMAZON on it.
The weirdest thing is how utterly quiet Canonical has been about how well its Ubuntu runs on hardware that M$ has recently abandoned. Atom CPUs are one, but there are probably others. It's like they're not into getting any business.

I forgot where I heard this from, but companies don't really like to use (or market) the name Linux, as it's strongly associated with open source software "that only geeks use", and given that companies want to make their product mainstream to the average Joe, they shy away from using it as I guess that could scare them off..

I don't see how DuckDuckGo can be more trustworthy than Google after they were bought out by Verizon, the same company that launched a "supercookie" on it's customers https://www.theverge.com/2016/3/7/11...-3-million-fcc which tracked every website they visited. So IMO why not just use the search engine with the better search results? I do like the DuckDuckGo app though cause there's an article feature that displays new articles from the most popular sites, and of various categories..

Definitely not a product of Amazon, atleast to the best of my kmowledge. It's a product made by Canonical, which was founded by Mark Shuttleworth who is from South Africa. My guess is they are either sponsored by Amazon, or they just include Amazon cause they think it's what users want.

I apologize what I said was not entirely accurate, but DuckDuckGo has partnered with Yahoo in order to improve functionality. And since Verizon owns Yahoo, I believe my point still stands, and also that's' now two companies in control of your search data..

I've used Ubuntu from my previous job and I can only say that it sucks. It tried to copy Windows but made things more complicated. You cannot even email a .doc file!

Ubuntu is recommended by journalists because they've heard of it! When it was launched, they gave out bundles of complimentary installation disks to magazines as if they were sweets.
Ubuntu to me means the crashing installer saga that lasted the best part of a year, since they didn't publicise Mint's solution, and the couple of years during which they shipped a broken snd_usb module.
