Upgrading to larger disks on IBM xSeries 335 server
Hello,
I am upgrading the disks on the following hardware and require some advice.
System Information:
Manufacturer: IBM
Product Name: eserver xSeries 335
OS:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3 (Taroon Update 9)
The disks are mirrored and I can see 72GB. I want to put 146GB disk in the server but am unsure how to do this.
I have heard If I change one of the disk and let the mirror rebuild on the larger disk it will still show as 72GB.
If I break the mirror and add the new disk, then use rsync to cpy the whole disk or use dd to copy everything to the 146GB disk, will only show as 72GB is this correct?
How should the root File system disks be upgraded?
Then you need to use the ServeRaid Manager software to increase the size of the array once you have swapped the disks. I assume you are going to swap one drive, let the array rebiuld it, then swap the other drive and let the array rebuild again. This will give you an under-utilised disk array, but you should now be able to increase the array.
IBM provide good documentation, so find your manuals and work through them. "Chapter 4. Managing ServeRAID devices" seems a good place to start.
I have been looking around and can not find the guide you mentioned on the IBM site.
I did find http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...x_console.html but it seemed to be about installing director.
My RaidMan version is 6.10.24 on RHEL3 U9
however I have been able to swap both disk over now to the 146 ones.
If you look at the following screen shot you can see the logical drive is the old size and the physical disk is the new size.
All I need to do is the resize the volume.
However for some reason all the actions are grayed out??? Any ideas? I ran teh App as root so It should not be permissions.
I'm not 100% certain, but I would imagine you need to perform this action by rebooting the server, and during the boot process invoke the option (control-a-q-s-v-r-whatever) to launch ServeRaid Manager directly. This boots the machine into the ServeRaid applet directly, where all of the options should be enabled.
I tried the rebooting of the server into the LSI Raid manager, unfortunately the only option I had were to break the mirror, or change the primary to secondary disk in the mirror.
Seems very strange there is no obvious way to extend the logical volume.
It is looking more and more likely that I will have to recreate the raid and the partitions, then put the data back on from a backup.
Maybe this LSI card does not have the required functions?
Thanks for your help, the problem seems to have resolved itself now? (Annoying when that happens!)
It was either the powering off the server, or maybe the defuncting disk 2, reboot, shutdown, LSI manager & removing the disks from the mirror, then changing the secondary disk to be the primary one? and rebuilding disk 1, not sure why but now RAIDMan reports the logical volume as 300GB.
Not very conclusive but it may help someone?
All I need to do now is resize the extended partition in parted and create a new partition.

Hi, I seem to have more or less the same problem. Somehow different.
IBM 335 (machine type 8676) with LSI logic 1030 SCSI controller
( LSI bios is at 5.04.07 )
When inserting the following disks ( 2 x 146 Gb P/N: 17R6324 ) I can't add them to a logical array
I get following error:
error creating logical drive controller 1
When booting, I receive: MPTboot Rom not supported
I have tried almost everything by now without any success:
- upgraded all bios stuff with Update Xpress
- used ServeRaid Manager 7.10.18 =>
