surprisingly many people are not able to make out the approximate time of day & compass directions from the position of the sun.

Agreed, completely. And the technology is leading the some of stupid to believe they're smart.

Funny you put it that way. I was just watching a clip of a show by the comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, who stated something to this effect. Paraphrasing, he said that his parents gave him rules to society growing up, and apparently nobody is given these rules anymore.
