Question StarOffice 6.0 and OpenOffice

I have been having trouble with installing either StarOffice 6.0 or OpenOffice. The problem is when I run the binary to start the setup, my machine freezes. Power off and retry. Same same.
I tried this with RH 7.1 and now with RH 7.2 on a Toshiba Tecra 8100 with 384 mb of ram. Linux 7.x runs great! I've given rights via chmod and via the gui. Same. I've installed from the gui and from the command line (./install,) same.
Am I losing my mind here or do I just need to stick with Koffice?

SOMETIMES the install gets further along but never past the Next button.

I even tried it on a Toshiba Desktop and THE SAME occurs. It must be user error.

Sign me nuts.

Unhappy

I have exactly the same problem with the following config :
IBM T21 - 256 Mo RAM
Fresh install of Mandrake 8.1.

I guess that there are some issues with X, and more specifically with the Savage S3 graphic board.

Guys
I had a similar problem with my laptop, generic celeron466 but using s3virge graphics. Whilst searching on google, I saw something about a problem with X Star office and drivers for s3virge, but had to head to work. Guess I'll check again.
Either of you got ess solo 1 sound, and managed to get it going after a recompile? I think I have to pretend to have a joystick or something.

Talking And the solution is ...

The following workaround worked just perfectly for me (T21 + S3 graphic board) :

see : http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html

StarOffice hangs on installation.
This is probably my #1 Most Frequently Asked Question... There is a known conflict between StarOffice 5.2 (and, presumably, OpenOffice as well) and the Savage driver up to 1.1.19. There is a note in the StarOffice README about hangs when using a ViRGE chip, along with a suggested workaround, and the workaround also applies to the Savage. The workaround is to set an environment variable "SAL_DO_NOT_USE_INVERT50" to "true" before launching StarOffice. The trickiest part is making sure StarOffice really sees the variable. If you use xdm/kdm, you must use one of the global rc files, like /etc/profile, /etc/bashrc, or /etc/rc.d/rc.local. NOTE, however, that this problem should no longer occur as of version 1.1.20t.

Thumbs up Re: StarOffice and OpenOffice.

Yep, that did it. As soon as I replaced the savage_drv.o driver with the one from http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html#laptop
The install worked like a charm.
Thanks much. Now to get a DVD player up and running.
