neither seems to have to do much with file sharing?
one claims to "replace the old insecure Internet protocol stack", the other has something to do with bitcoins?

"GNUnet is a mesh routing layer for end-to-end encrypted networking and a framework for distributed applications designed to replace the old insecure Internet protocol stack" So basically it's a framework for secure P2P, and filesharing is P2P... A blockchain is a distributed public database which are syncronized together to ensure the validity of the data transfer.. I was thinking it would it would be a good idea to integrate a blockchain into GNUnet, if that's even feasible as I dont know a whole lot about these technologies. So thats definitly not a alternative I guess as it doesnt exsist. Some currently exsisting filesharing alternatives would be Herd and Riffle.

ok, well i was thinking more along the lines of readily usable alternatives.
i couldn't find anything about herd, but riffle looks interesting.

i found this article and 1 or 2 similar ones, and according to them it still seems to be mostly bittorrent and - to my surprise - eMule! i thought that was long dead... but probably even less secure/private/anonymous than torrenting?

I couldn't tell you im not sure, but I know Riffle's main selling point is that it's inspired by Dissident, which is supposed to be ultra-secure cus it's based on the dining cryptographers algorithm, or "DC-net." And it's combined with a verifiable-shuffle algorithm, which makes it the most anonymous design currently under investigation by researchers.. Unfortunately with ultra-secure comes with tradeoffs in latency and bandwidth.. Riffle like Dissent, uses a verifiable shuffle algorithm (hence the name "Riffle"), but forgoes the DC-net crypto primitive in order to make the network more
efficient. Riffle is designed to work with Tor by making it more secure... Also mybad none of these are actually ready to use as their works in progress, all of them... Full details on ARs website.
