Exclamation OS Showdown debate ... Windows vs Linux vs Mac ...

Ok ....... I'd like to start a ultimate debate on os's .... There have been many posts on numerous forums about this but none which really cover everything .... After doing research its bcome obvious that the 'best' os for a user is what it is going to be used for ... Obviously someone using the computer just for email would rather have Windows rather than all the benefits Linux, mac can offer ... This is not a "question" by me, im simply trying to organize a good debate on these issues which can be looked upon by other members and put into articles at other websites ... Please check your posts for spelling, language, and lets keep things possitive! No put downs ..

There are many linux distros and other os's but lets keep the debate upon the "top few" ... This includes:

Windows 2000
Windows XP
Linux Mandrake 9.1
Redhat Linux 9.0
Suse (newest ver) (im not informed on which is the most current)

As I said earlier the 'best' os depends on what the user is using the computer for ... This topic will be for Web designers and Basic users, no servers etc ... Lets assume everybody has the money for each operating system (and for the hardware needed) so "Because linux is free" or "M$ is overpriced" will not be discussed .... Some points to remember and compare are:

Program usability (The use threw Wine in linux's case)
Remote Desktop Connection
Look and feel
Stability
Boot time

... For more technical details visit other sites which compare features ...

Let the debate begin ........

I think no need to debate.
Nowadays everybody knows that Windows sucks and every OS which is not windows is good.
Even Bill Gates knows it although he is too shy to admit it.

I think you should rather debate
"Why does windows too suck?" or
"Why are the creators of windows incredibly lousy?"

Thumbs up Yep, sounds about right

I agree with moeminhtun on this. I hate windoze. It crashes, has to reboot to prevent that and sometimes that don't work. Show me a windoze system that can run for years and not need to reboot and still run at the same speed. Linux can do that even if you install software.
Windoze may boot faster but you also have to do it more often. I would rather have one long stable boot that to have a whole bunch of 'sucky' ones.
I have a friend who owns a small newspaper and uses Quark. They have to reboot about 4 or 5 times each day. This after a complete wipe of hard drive and fresh clean install of OS and Quark. It's not Quark either, its windoze. XP is better but still has a long way to go, long ways to go.
If there were no Linux, I'd own a Mac.

Bill Gates, your stuff sucks!!!!!!!!!

We've got a million threads on this. Maybe no one of them says everything but neither will this one - together they all do. You should just get in on

Y use Linux instead of windows? with over 700 posts and 31,000 views

Why not build an OS like windows in filesystem and operation? with over 200 replies and almost 4000 views

or any of the other dozens or hundreds of beasts roaming about.

Besides, you left off Slack and that's at the top of the top few - in my book.

Im sorry... you are posting this in linuxquestions.org. what kind of answer do you think you will get? And if you consider mandy, suse, and rh the only distros, you havnt read much about linux. what about slackware? connectiva? debian? knoppix? college linux? vector? for christs sake, even lindows? they are not different operating systems, in linux there is a different distro for each persons needs.

No servers? What do you think linux is really good at?(I know, my desktop is pretty good too).

Xstacy, where are you from? Do you think everybody can afford the latest and greatest? Pricing does matter to a good many people.
$199us for an operating system is pretty steep for alot of people. If I had to buy all the Microsoft software that I would need for school work, it would be more than my computers cost combined.

boot time? that seems completely irrelevant...especially where you really dont need to reboot linux unless upgrading your kernel or something...who cant occupy themselves for a minute while their computer boots??

and rh suse mandy arent the top you gotta at least include gentoo even though its not really a distro...its the best piece of linux ive ever placed my hands on

Well, heh, for windows, boot time is an issue ... Im aware linux is good with servers ... thats obvious, but it is also striving to become a desktop pc ... Im also aware of how overpriced ms software is, I dont disagree, but During debates many times the features don't get talked about much and that is used as the main deciding issue ... We all know linux is free windows is expensive, I didnt want it to get repeated .

But I guess I cant expect to get a debate on windows from linux fans( and im not saying I dont like linux) just saying that everyone will be 4 linux, lol ...

even as a desktop, linux doesnt need to be rebooted for months, or even years at a time. that is why people are saying boot time isnt an issue. if it is, then look at slackware. as i said, on a slow pc, 30 seconds max. in 30 seconds, im in a fully loaded KDE.

Ofcourse, for Windows boot time is an issue because it has to reboot 100 times a day. With Linux, even the boot time is 5 minutes, it's quite OK. Not important.

When you wake up (assumeing it's weekend), just turn on your Linux. While booting up, you go and have sex with your gf and come back, there it is, already up. And you work the whole day with it, Install anything you want and at night just before you have sex with your gf again before you sleep, shut it down. That's it. No rebooting.

Windows designers (including Bill Gates) are incredibly lousy that they design such a rebooting for changes design. Windows is the only OS on earth which need to reboot for changes. It's no surprising that Windows is lousy because its creators are lousy.
