My computer fans are noisy!

Hello,
I have bought my computer about 3 years ago and now nearly 2 of the 3 fans are so loud that the I really feel comfort when I turn the computer off at the end of the day.

Back with my old computer I sprayed the fan's core with WD-40 but it only worked for a short while then I had to spray it again.

A suggestion was to add a drop of Oil or lubricant to the fan's core but my father told me it was not a good idea and I did not understand why.

Another suggestion was to remove the dust from those fans but nothing changed (I tried an air blower).

Any ideas on how to make my computer SHUT UP and let me work in peace

ps: buying new fans is a temporary option because the quality of the new separately sold fans is worse than the original.

Generally speaking, unless you purchase a server-grade chassis, the stock fans are junk. You can upgrade with better fans with bearings, which will last much longer, and run quieter, than the cheaper ones with bushings.

Hmm, did you try regular oil or something? I've heard sewing machine oil is the best for PC fans.

Great suggestion trickykid This way even if the CPU is producing any noise it will be as quite as a dead mouse in a trap

I asked about the sewing machine oil and they told me it is a light oil not sticky should not cause any trouble

I will look for some and tell you what happened.

My solution is to put the computer in a closet and use a fanless thin client for access.

WD-40 is about the worst thing you could have done, it is not a good lubricant, it is a good solvent and removed the oil that was there and once the WD-40 dried, the bearings were left dry. I use oil meant for sewing machines or a silicon based lubricant.

Hah! Heh heh heh. You're a slick man in the Dox Systems business. Truly a novel approach to noise control.

My suggestion is to lubricate the fans using sewing machine oil, or a silicon based lubricant, like Elliot said. After that, you might want to install acoustic foam inside the case, for added effect.

I recently bought a new case, simply because I came across a special case that was designed for noise dampening. It is the Antec Sonata Designer 500 case. It has noise dampening material on the sides and top of the case, and special noise dampening grommets for mounting the hard disks. Overall, this is a KICKASS case. My computer is more quiet now. And even when I rap, I rap more better.
All I need now is a drum beat.

Well the bigger the fan the slower you can have it so the quiter it'll be, or try lowering the voltages of your current fans enough without causing heating issues.
Ultimatly i'd get a new case with some good side exhausts and, somthing that you can put your next computer into as well.

I think that the side exhaust is a bad Idea bucause my case got it and it is an extra fan with extra noise (Sorry Deform)
And thank you Elliott for the information about WD-40. but around here it is like the magic that can solve anything and it is highly recommended whenever anything happens

anyway, I got Sewing machine oil, added some to my computer fans, it worked perfectly but I realized that the problem was mainly in my computers position, it is in the corner of the room between my desk and the walls so the noise is still there but no initital knocking when starting the computer.

I will try moving things around to have less sound reflections from the walls or I could try the thin client or replace my computer with a laptop but I guess the first option is the easiest and cheapest

Do you have a large empty cardboard box around? Put it on top of your computer. It will stop the noise from echoing across the room.

I know from experience.

Nice idea, but I think it could help raising the temperature of the computer
The weather in Egypt is much hotter than England

I will look for one and monitor the computer's temperature with gkrellem or any other software and I hope it helps

Thank you.

I can understand your concern. It's not so bad, though, so long as you have a fan mounted at the front to intake cool air inside the case.

Good luck.

Hi, wd40 will wash the lube out, sewing machine oil is thin and will not last long... for very good lon term result use a molebendum grease thinned out with a few drops of wd, this will coat the bearing surfaces with low friction lube 7 will last forever, as mine have, and it was a cheap screamer.
