MS Exchange and Blackberry Issue?

Hi guys, dunno if there's anyone here who knows about this stuff, but here goes...

I have a new client with a Microsoft Exchange server in their office (I know NOTHING about Exchange).

The boss there used to have a Blackberry, but has recently switched to an iPhone.

When people send emails to his address, the mail arrives at the Exchange server okay, but the sender gets back an email like this (names changed):

_____________________________________________
From: System Administrator
Sent: Tuesday, 4 August 2009 4:16 p.m.
To: Sample Sender Name
Subject: Undeliverable: profit and loss reports

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: profit and loss reports

Sent: 4/08/2009 4:16 p.m.

The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:

Sample Name on 4/08/2009 4:12 p.m.

The e-mail system was unable to deliver the message, but did not report a specific reason. Check the address and try again. If it still fails, contact your system administrator.

< as11.bis.ap.blackberry.com #5.0.0 smtp; 5.1.0 - Unknown address error 550-'5.1.1 <sampleaddress@vodafonenz.ap.blackberry.net>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table' (delivery attempts: 0)>

_____________________________________________

I'm guessing the 'System Administrator' sending this is the Exchange server.

I'm also guessing that the Exchange server is trying to forward to a no longer active Blackberry account...?

Can someone please give me some quick instructions on how to check and change settings regarding forwarding emails on the Exchange server.

I'm open to other suggestions as I don't know much about how Blackberry works either and the problem could be there, or even with a POP server further up the chain....or anything :-(

(To be honest with you, I don't really want to learn about Exchange that much, as this is the only client I know with it and we are looking at getting rid of it when they move buildings soon, but we should get this fixed now anyway)

Thanks in advance...

Which address are they sending to? Is it to sampleaddress@vodafonenz.ap.blackberry.net or to sampleaddress@theirdomain.net? It may be that the sender has an old address in their contact list. In which case, you need to track down where the old address is held and set up a forward or get the person to tell his friends to update their settings. Also, you need to see whether they have or had a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) which used to handle the mail forwarding.

Hi XavierP

People are sending mail to mark@theirdomain.co.nz and mark@theirotherdomain.co.nz, other addresses on the same domains don't have this problem.

I tried sending to the correct address from my gmail account, the mail arrived but I got this response:

You could be right about the BES (or maybe BIS?) being involved, I'll look into it.

Thanks for the input, I'll keep you posted....

Can you check what email id the mail is being sent to. With every possibility they are sending it to the wrong account.

Do you mean the actual email address? I've sent some myself to the correct address and I still get that error back. Everyone seems to now get the undeliverable message, even if they used to send emails to him all the time.

I think its got something to do with changing from the Blackberry to the iPhone...

@ XavierP

Thanks for the suggestion. They tell me they DID used to have a BES (but he could be confusing it with BIS BlackBerry Internet Service...)

Does a BES retrieve mail from pop servers in order to make it available to Blackberries or something like that?

I'll start looking into it but its not really a high priority now, the mail is getting to where it needs to. (I'm hoping the problem will disappear after this BlackBerry account has been closed for a while)

I think that a BES is the internal routing server for BBs to fire mail to and from the regular exchange server. So it could be that the mails are still trying to route through that.
