monitor troubles

what causes the image on a monitor to go lopsided?
i just bought one the other day and the left vertical side leans to the right noticeably, while the left verticle line goes straight up and down...what gives?
any help is appreciated!

how old is the monitor? some newer ones have adjustments for just about every rotation and angle you can think of.

it IS a pretty old monitor

the monitor is a multiscan--something or other... they were supposed to be made for some old apples but they were never bought so they were sold at a very cheap price... 17" for 79.00, never been used... got one for my mom too and hers works fine.

the picture is actually very good but it is somewhat lopsided...(my wife maitains that it is ok but what does she know?:-)) at any rate... there is a vertical movement, horizontal movement, vertical stretch, horizontal stretch, a fattening and thinning stretch, and a trapezoid stretch... i dont see much else as far as options go...

is there a secret too straightening these things out?

other than just messing around with the trapezoid, i don't think there's much you can do. monitors don't fix easy.

Have you tried switching to another resolution? I've got an Eizo FlexScan 560i which seems to go a bit googly-eyed like yours at some resolutions, and not at the others. I've actually found that 1024x768 and 1600x1200 are the best, all the inbetween ones are a bit odd.

Also, my monitor keeps switching itself off. I can be running it for a couple of days, and it's as happy as Larry. Then I come to it later, and it's turned itself off. If I reboot it's fine for about 15mins, then it does the same thing. It's not the powersaving mode (I know that some smartass might suggest this) as this does a nice clean switch-off. This just sort of goes 'blink, blink, buzz, click' (nice and descriptive, I know) and off it goes.

I know it's a bit vague, but does anyone else have this problem (preferably people with the same monitor as myself)?
