lol comon just having some fun
no os war here, just amusing comments about windows
With the leasing of win2k3 and exchange 2k3 and with the reduced opptions of Longhorn (now it is nothing more then a revamped XP) Microsoft has nothing any longer that I am interested in as both a EU and as the IT manager for several small companies.
We have started making our move to linux and everyone is very happy with the power, stability, lack of viruses, and its scalability over what Microsoft products have offerend in the past and what they promise to offer in the coming years.
Even the newest greatest tool from MS has already been disabled by a virus (MS spyware blocker tool) and it has been out for less then a month in beta form. MS has done nothing yet to patch or fix this issue and so it is left up to IT managers once again to waist their valuble time in dealing with this issue instead of more important mission critical areas of their job.
It cost so much more in man power to keep a windows enviroment up and running smoothly and more in downtime due to rebooting all of the systems then a linux enviroment. the uptimes and patching are far better under linux then MS.
The average uptime in a windows enviroment for user computers is between 7-30 days, in a linux enviroment those numbers grow quickly into the tripple digits. Less downtime equals more productivity, more productivity equals more proffit for the companies, and proffit is why most business are there in the first place.
Currently there are 2 major issues preventing Linux from taking over as the EU main desktop.
1. hardware venders not providing proper documentations or equvilent drivers in power as they do for the MS world.
2. software venders making bad code in their product tieing to exclusivly to programs like IE thus making them vulnerable to all of the viruses out there and preventing alternative operating systems like MAC, Linux, Unix, BSD, etc from useing their now insecure, but widly spread product.
For the small business there is very little reason to prevent a move from the windows world to the linux world provided those small companies are not hog tied to a software company that builds only for insecure and bad programs like IE.
that was my response and IMHO is 100% accurate. the only reason i can not convert one of my companies i do some IT work for over to linux 100% is they are stuck using a 3rd party software app that only runs in windows, and in fact will only run on a windows server due to its use of .NET with SQL server 2003.
This is a HUGE financial burdon on this small company if they make this upgrade as they will not only have to buy 2 more win2k servers, but also a .NET and SQL server license and fees for client license. Now if the 3rd party company had built their software around the RFC for SQL then a mySQL server would do the trick and I could save that small company roughly $4,000 - 6,000 in fees and hardware.
It is 3rd party companies that are preventing the move from MS to Linux in the small business enviroment. it is games that is slowing the move down for home users, and it is big money slowing the move down for fortune 500 companies. that last bit is something linux will not have a chance to overcome until it grows more previlent in the home and small business enviroments.
anyways, enough of my triate(sp?) on this subject. I am just glad this survey is out there and i look forward to seeing the results of the survey and hope they get posted to many popular IT sites for others to see and hopefully learn from.
